Tips for Taking Tests
The multiple choice tests are designed to accurately reflect the extent of student's knowledge and ability. The Tests probe into every corner of the syllabus and cover more ground than conventional essay type tests, and there is no allowance for large gaps in knowledge. A Multiple choice question has three parts.
1. A stem which asks a question, poses a problem or an incomplete sentence.
2. The answer to the stem.
3. A number of incorrect answers called ‘distracters’.
The answers to these questions are either ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ and some marks are docked for any guess work. The following tips may, however, be helpful. But remember, the golden rule is, that there is no golden rule.
• Come to the test centre well prepared and early: Late arrival will make you anxious and anxiety is the root cause of a racing pulse and a mind going blank.
• Bring all the materials you will need: Bring all the materials you will need, such as, pens, pencils and a watch. This will help you to focus on the task at hand.
• Stay relaxed, do not panic: Do not talk too much to other students, before taking the exam; anxiety is contagious. Several deep slow breaths before and during exam, will help reducing anxiety. Slight anxiety is unavoidable; the rise in adrenalin is useful to keep you alert.
• Know when to guess: Guess when there is no penalty for wrong answers or you can eliminate options. Do not blindly fill in answer to a totally unknown question - odds may swing against you.
• Use the process of elimination procedure: Read the stem of the question all the way through, followed by each possible answer all the way through. The options themselves will provide a hint for the correct answer. If you are not sure of the answer, cross out the options, you know are wrong. It is okay to write on the test booklet. Mark the question for re-consideration later on.
• Circle all ‘100% words’: Circle all ‘100% words’ (that do not allow exceptions, like ‘all’) and negative words within the question stem and options. Then ‘all the above’ is a strong possibility.
• Check for ‘look alike’ options: If you are sure of the answer check for ‘look alike’ options: the option that contains the most information should be studied closely.
• Analyse your Test results: Analyse your test results. It will be your preparation for the next test. Identify which strategies worked best, and which did not work well. Use your tests to review when studying for final exams.
• Spend time on reading the questions before marking the answer: Underline the keywords in the question before looking at the alternatives. Try to recall wherefrom your text, lecture notes, the question is drawn from. Do some calculations, where possible.
• Predict Answer before looking at alternatives: This will help prevent you to be swayed by incorrect alternatives.
• Be wary of changing your mind: You should not change an answer unless you are absolutely certain. There is evidence to suggest that, students more frequently change right answers to wrong ones than vice versa. Always mark the answers in the answer sheet only. No extra time is allowed to transfer your answer to the answers sheet.
• Pace yourself properly throughout the test: You will have just about one minute per question. Avoid getting bogged down on one question. Return to problematic questions after completing the test. A good strategy for taking a multiple choice test is to go through the test answering all the questions you can, without worrying about questions you find problematic. Doing the easier questions will help allay some of the anxiety that tests so often evoke. If you control your time in the examinations you will not run out of time or face increased stress.
Avoid the following
• Relying on myth and misconceptions: Do not choose your answer on the pattern of earlier responses. Another poor strategy is ‘if in doubt pick c’. It is a myth.
• Relying on recognition: Sometimes students select alternatives because they recognise them as being from the course. Recognition entails choosing a familiar item. Understand the meaning of each alternative with respect to the context of the question.
• Running out of time: Some students can better manage their time, attempt more questions than others in the same duration of time. This will definitely give them an edge upon others. Track your progress at intervals: halfway through the test you should be more than halfway through the questions. Some questions take longer than others.
• Dismissing alternatives because they seem too obvious: Some students have tendency to dismiss certain alternatives because they seem too obvious. It is your own assumption that MCQs are tricky and always require application of complex concepts.
Admission Procedure
The admission form must be sent to the corporate office or alternatively submitted in the test centre of your choice. The prospectus containing the admission form can be had, either from the head office or from any of the test centres. Completed admission form, along with testimonials, three photographs and a demand draft for course fee in favour of A.K. Vidyamandir Pvt.
